Lawrence J. Smith, M.D.




Lawrence J. Smith, M.D., is the 2010 President of the Sangamon County Medical Society, and is an Internist and Nephrologist with Central Illinois Kidney & Dialysis Associates, where he has practiced since 1992. He is board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine - Nephrology. Dr. Smith is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine, and serves as Division Chief of Nephrology, in the SIU Department of Medicine. Since 2006, Smith has served as Director of the Acute Dialysis Program at Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Chicago School of Medicine in 1986. He completed his residency at the University of Minnesota in Internal Medicine in 1989, followed by a fellowship in Nephrology, also at the University of Minnesota in 1992. He began serving on the SCMS Board of Directors in 2008, and has served as a Delegate to the Illinois State Medical Society's House of Delegates since 2005. A native of Chicago, he and his wife, Sheila Stocks-Smith, are the parents of two children.
