"Medical Innovators" Submissions, 2020

The "Medical Innovators" returned in 2020 as Illinois Capital Innovation Awards. SCMS teamed with Innovate Springfield, UIS, Springfield Clinic and other area businesses to heighten awareness and recognition about the truly significant advancements in fields such as medical treatments, clinical trials, and/or medical research currently taking place within the District. It also aims to reflect the breadth and depth of the world-class physicians and medical researchers working here.

Doctors of Medicine, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctors of Philosophy who met the submission criteria were invited to submit your application at www.illinoisinnovationawards.com. Members were encouraged to nominate such individuals whose work deserved recognition.

Medical Innovators Program Releases
Fourth Video in the Eight Video Series

The Sangamon County Medical Society has released the fourth video in a series that highlights the innovation and research achievements within the local medical community. Each video profiles a 2013 Medical Innovators Award recipient.

The video features Dr. Judith Knox, a dermatologist at Springfield Clinic. Dr. Knox was named a Medical Innovator for her community service efforts to advocate for a state-wide ban on the use of indoor tanning salons by minors.

The 5-minute video describes her work to secure the state ban and includes supportive words from SIU dermatologist Dr. Stephen Stone and a patient testimonial.

The Medical Innovators program, first established in 2006, recognizes physicians, surgeons and researchers working in Sangamon County to improve the health care of the community. Projects recognized include basic science research findings, leading-edge clinical trials, new patient-care treatments and community service projects. The Sangamon County Medical Society, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce coordinated the program, sponsored by The Illinois State Medical Society.

The series includes eight videos produced by Springfield Clinic in collaboration with the Sangamon County Medical Society and SIU School of Medicine. A new video in the series will be released on the last Monday of each month between January and August, leading up to the call for nominations beginning in September 2015 for the 2016 Medical Innovators award program.

A look at the cutting edge medical research, advanced treatments and clinical trials taking place within the Mid-Illinois Medical District

Advancing the Center of Medical Excellence within the Mid-Illinois Medical District

The Sangamon County Medical Society's (SCMS) "Medical Innovators recognition program" is an inside look at the top tier, medical treatment and research underway in the recently expanded Mid-Illinois Medical District (MIMD). This publication provides a review of some of the cutting-edge and advanced medical treatments, research and clinical trials taking place within our immediate community. These all have far-reaching national and international effects on the future of medicine as we know it.

SCMS joins in this collaborative effort with The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce (The Chamber), and their Quantum Growth Partnership — all in support of advancing the center of medical excellence located in the Mid-Illinois Medical District. This partnership between academia and business continues to create a strong sense of empowerment between the medical and business communities. Through such efforts, we can help the Mid-Illinois Medical District continue to evolve as a national center for medical excellence.

The last edition was released at a special exhibition in support of MIMD on March 30, 2009. SCMS convened a Peer Review Panel of five member physicians and researchers who reviewed submissions from the leading innovators who practice medicine and conduct research here, and who contribute to our stature as a preeminent regional health care center. The panel is to be thanked for their time and commitment to maintaining a fair and objective review process that remained circumspect in its endeavor. They practiced due diligence each and every step along the way.

Medical Miracles

A look at the cutting edge medical research, advanced treatments and clinical trials taking place within the Illinois Medical District at Springfield

What "Medical Miracles" Are Inside the Illinois Medical District at Springfield?

Welcome to the first edition of the Sangamon County Medical Society's "Medical Miracles" — a close look at the significant advanced medical treatments, scientific research and clinical trials taking place within the new Illinois Medical District at Springfield (IMDS). This publication was introduced at the "Medical District Expo" on June 16, 2006, at the James T. Dove, M.D. Conference Center in the Prairie Heart Institute in Springfield. These "Medical Miracles" and the people behind them illustrate some of the great discoveries, research and development, and medical advancements that give the IMDS its preeminence as a growing center of medical excellence.

As part of our continued support of the IMDS and belief in the promise it holds, the Sangamon County Medical Society convened a Peer Review Panel of member physicians to identify the leading innovators who practice medicine and conduct research here, and who contribute to this city's overall stature as a regional center of quality health care.

The work by these 21 individuals selected is representative of the discoveries being formulated and the newest medical care being provided, and serve as a cross-section of the extensive areas of research currently underway. We plan to host such similar recognition programs on an annual basis, thus honoring many more of the fine physicians and researchers within our medical community. We thank the panel for their time and commitment to maintaining a fair and objective review process that remained circumspect in its endeavor. They practiced due diligence each and every step along the way.
