About SCMS
The Sangamon County Medical Society (SCMS) is the professional, scientific organization of over 1,000 medical and osteopathic physician, resident and medical student members working in Springfield and Sangamon County. We are the local affiliate of the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
Founded in 1899, our office is located within the newly created Illinois Medical District of Springfield, and is now the second largest county medical society in Illinois. Although membership is voluntary, SCMS members understand that quality medical care means being involved with legislative advocacy, public information and community health education and affairs. We provide physicians with connection to their peers, credibility within their own profession and with the public, and access to critical and timely information.
SCMS provides a community physician referral service for our members, educational and social opportunities, newsletters and peer review mediation. Programs are sponsored throughout the year that will enrich your experience in medicine, improve your ability to practice your art, and bring you into social contact with your colleagues.
Dedicated to helping physicians serve their patients, we are represented by two District Trustees, who serve on the Board of Trustees and by 11 Delegates and six Alternate Delegates, elected annually, who express recommendations to the legislative and policy-making Illinois State Medical Society House of Delegates.
The active participation of our members is the lifeblood of this organization. We hope you will share your energy and your ideals with us.
SCMS: Our 2012 President
Laura Shea, M.D.
Leading the Sangamon County Medical Society as president in 2012 is Dr. Laura Shea.
Dr. Shea, the daughter of Raymond and May Shea, grew up in Springfield, Illinois. She attended the local Catholic schools, attended Lincoln Land, SIU Carbondale and SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Shea married Gary Lamsargis almost 30 years ago and has two grown children, Grant and Hannah.
Dr. Shea completed her residency in general psychiatry and earned her medical degree at SIU School of Medicine (1990, 1986). She earned her bachelor's at SIU Carbondale (1982).
Dr. Laura Shea returned to the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of medicine and psychiatry and a member of SIU Health Care, the medical school's practice group.
Most recently, Dr. Shea was in private practice in Springfield (2004-10, 1993-1997) and served as a unit psychiatrist at McFarland Mental Health Center (1998-2004) and medical director of Heartland Human Services in Effingham (1996-98). She also served as a consultant with the Graham Correctional Center (1999-2000), Jacksonville Correctional Center (1994-1998) and Montgomery County Mental Health Center (1993-1997). She was first on the SIU faculty in 1990-1993.
Dr. Shea is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She served at the vice president of the Sangamon County Medical Society in 2011 and now welcomes the opportunity to serve as the President in 2012.
"We have an incredibly vibrant community of physicians and physicians in training here in Sangamon County. I believe the Sangamon County Medical Society represents us like no other society or affiliation can." — Dr. Laura Shea
President's Message
By Laura Shea, M.D., SCMS President
We have an incredibly vibrant community of physicians and physicians in training here in Sangamon County. I believe the Sangamon County Medical
Society represents us like no other society or affiliation can.
My Goals as president in 2012 include:
Encouraging other physicians to get involved.
Supporting our new director, her staff, the CATCH Program and the Alliance.
Promoting programs and policies that help our physicians practice good medicine.
We are always open to new members and anyone can get more involved, either with our local board or as a delegate to the ISMS. This allows you to meet physicians from all over the state and contribute to the recommendations we make to legislative entities.
I became an Alternate Delegate to the ISMS about six years ago because Dr. Leonard Giannone asked me. I may have initially and hesitantly said yes
because he is a friendly and persuasive individual, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the opportunity to meet nice people, eat good food and have stimulating conversations about things that could make a difference in our community.
Thank you for electing me. I will do my best! Please feel free to contact me or our Director, Carol Harms at 217-726-5106 or carol@scmsdocs.org if you have any questions or ideas.
